With support for AWS IAM Identity Center (formerly AWS Single Sign-On) now available in Cyberduck 9.5.0 and Mountain Duck 5.3.0, connecting to S3 has never been easier or more secure.

What is AWS IAM Identity Center?

AWS IAM Identity Center is AWS’s centralized access management solution that lets users sign in once using their existing corporate credentials—whether that’s through Okta, Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD), or other identity providers. Instead of managing permanent access keys, users get short-lived credentials that automatically expire, significantly improving your security posture.

Why Use IAM Identity Center with S3?

Traditional S3 access requires creating and managing AWS access keys for each user. These long-lived credentials pose security risks if accidentally exposed or shared. IAM Identity Center solves this by:

Single Sign-On: Users authenticate once with their corporate credentials

Short-lived credentials: Temporary credentials that automatically expire and rotate. No more permanent access keys to manage or rotate

Centralized management: Control access across multiple AWS accounts from one place

Getting Started

Setting up IAM Identity Center authentication for S3 requires two main steps:

1. Configure AWS IAM Identity Center

First, enable IAM Identity Center in your AWS account and configure your identity source. You can use AWS’s built-in directory or connect to an external identity provider like Microsoft Entra ID or Okta. Create a permission set that defines what S3 resources users can access—for example, read-only or full access to specific buckets. Add users through IAM Identity Center (or sync them from your external identity provider) and assign them to AWS accounts with the appropriate permission sets. Users will receive an invitation to set up their access to the AWS access portal.

3. Connect in Cyberduck or Mountain Duck

Creating a connection is straightforward:

Create a new bookmark and select AWS S3 (IAM Identity Center) from the protocol dropdown

Provide your SSO region and start URL when prompted

Authenticate through your web browser using your corporate credentials

Approve access to Cyberduck or Mountain Duck in the AWS portal

Choose the AWS Account ID shown when your user has access to multiple accounts and the Permission Role Name if more than a single permission set is configured

The browser will redirect back to the application, and you’re connected—no access keys to copy or store.

Streamlined Workflow with AWS CLI Integration

For teams already using the AWS CLI, Cyberduck and Mountain Duck can read configuration directly from your
~/.aws/config
file. Simply configure your profile once with
aws configure sso
, allowing you to skip the manual input.

Get Started

AWS IAM Identity Center support is available now in Cyberduck 9.5 and Mountain Duck 5.3. Version 5 is a solid major upgrade in development for several years with many new features and refinements, including a new Integrated Connect Mode, storage-independent file versioning support, and SMB connections.

New Features

Integrated Connect Mode

Mountain Duck 5 features a new Integrated connect mode using native APIs on Windows & macOS to integrate in the file explorer. No device driver installation or network mount required. The connect mode delivers significantly faster file write performance and file operations that match the speed of local disk operations, and a user experience similar to OneDrive on Windows or iCloud Drive on macOS but with any cloud storage provider of your choice.

Windows Search and Spotlight on macOS can be used to search for files on remote storage in Integrated connect mode.

See also the blog post Integrated Connect Mode for this feature.

SMB Support

As already available in Cyberduck, Mountain Duck 5 expands its protocol support with the addition of SMB (Server Message Block), enabling seamless connectivity to Windows file shares, Linux Samba, macOS File Sharing & Azure File Shares.

Custom Versioning

The new Custom Versioning feature allows to safeguard and restore previous file versions. The previous version is stashed away before overwriting a file.

The option is available for all protocols with no support of file versioning such as FTP, SFTP or WebDAV ensuring your files are protected with version history regardless of the underlying storage protocol. File versions can be view and restored in the Info window.

See also the blog post Custom Versioning for this feature.

Version 5 is the first paid upgrade after version 4 debuted in June 2020 with 17 free minor updates released since. Users with a license for version 4 receive an upgrade discount between 20% to 100%.

Integrated Connect Mode

The new Integrated connect mode in Mountain Duck 5 synchronizes files and folders from a directory on the local disk with support from macOS and Windows. It allows faster writing and copy processes and access to cached content when offline.

Synchronization

The usage of dedicated operating system features for syncing make Mountain Duck 5 future proof. Like in Smart Synchronization connect mode, files are displayed as placeholders, cached on local disk and optionally selected to always keep offline.

The improved user experience includes familiar file management controls directly within Finder and Windows Explorer, allowing users to easily select files to keep offline, remove cached data, or exclude items from synchronization. Visual indicators provide instant feedback on synchronization status through additional icons displayed next to filenames. Real-time progress is shown during file transfers with progress bars over file icons and circular progress indicators, giving users complete visibility into upload and download operations.

Additional Context Menu Items

Additional context menu items in Windows Explorer and Finder.app on macOS provided by the system allow to download files or free up space for files already cached.

Spotlight

Windows Search and Spotlight on macOS can be used to search for files on remote storage in Integrated connect mode.

Features new Integrated connect mode using native APIs on Windows & macOS to integrate in the file explorer. No device driver installation or network mount required. The connect mode allows to sync files like OneDrive on Windows or iCloud Drive on macOS using the cloud storage provider of your choice. All major protocols are supported to connect to just about any server you want with SMB added as an additional option in version 5.

The new connect mode benefits from faster file write performance and file operations in general on par with operations on local disk. Local storage is managed by the operating system. The mount is not seen as a remote volume by applications but as a regular folder on disk and can be accessed when offline. You will find familiar user interface in Finder and Windows Explorer to select files to keep offline, remove cached data on disk or exclude from sync. An additional icon provided next to the filename is displayed indicating the synchronization status. Additionally, progress is shown when downloading or uploading a file with a progress bar over the file icon or circular progress indicator adjacent the filename. Windows Search and Spotlight on macOS can be used to search for files.

Choose Preferences → Update → Beta → Check for Update… in the Mountain Duck status bar menu to update.
Google recently blocked the consent screen and now shows the following error when trying to open a new connection:

This app tried to access sensitive info in your Google Account. To keep your account safe, Google blocked this access.

We are aware of the problem and are currently working on getting the consent screen re-approved by Google.

No user data is collected or shared when you access your data in Google Drive or Google Cloud Storage using Cyberduck or Mountain duck. We do not transfer or disclose your information to third parties. Any data accessed is processed solely on your device.

ownCloud Infinite Scale uses federated authentication with Keycloak as the identity provider by default. To connect using Cyberduck or Mountain Duck.

We will provide sample steps to connect to ownCloud Infinite Scale (oCIS) using OAuth 2.0/OpenID Connect (OIDC). It requires the client registration in the identity provider in ownCloud and a custom connection profile for Cyberduck & Mountain Duck. To allow to test this without a custom deployment, the sample makes use of the public instance running at ocis.ocis-keycloak.latest.owncloud.works with the identity provider at keycloak.ocis-keycloak.latest.owncloud.works. You can login with the username “admin” and password “admin”. Note that these demo instances are wiped periodically and all data and configuration is temporarily available only.

Import client configuration

You will need to import a client configuration for Keycloak to allow OAuth authentications from Cyberduck & Mountain Duck. The configuration registers a OAuth Client ID with the redirect URIs
x-cyberduck-action:oauth
and
x-mountainduck-action:oauth
set to allow a seamless login integration.

Connection Profile

The connection profile defines the custom OAuth Client ID to be used to connect to ownCloud including the authorization and token URLs used for authentication with the Keycloak identity provider. The connection profile matching the above client registration is

Connections to S3 with web identity federation use AWS Security Token Service (STS) API to obtain temporary security credentials to authenticate with S3.

With web identity federation, you don’t need to (…) manage your own user identities. Instead, users of your app can sign in using a well-known external OpenID Connect (OIDC)-compatible IdP. They can receive an authentication token, and then exchange that token for temporary security credentials in AWS that map to an IAM role with permissions to use the resources in your AWS account. Using an IdP helps you keep your AWS account secure, because you don’t users to have long-term security credentials.

Default connection profiles for Google and Azure

Default connection profiles are provided to use Google or Azure AD as an identity provider in conjunction with AWS.

These default profiles will prompt users for the Role ARN configured in AWS IAM referencing the trust relationship configured with the identity provider. Assigned by AWS this has a format similar to arn:aws:iam::930717317329:role/my-role-name.

Configuration in AWS IAM

Add an identity provider in IAM. Refer to the documentation from AWS.

Assign a role. The role is crucial as it contains both the trust relationship with the identity provider and permission policy:

The trust policy restricts access to users authenticated with a specific identity provider and allows to filter for specific users in the Condition statement with access to the JSON Web Token (JWT) claims that can be matched.

With the permission policy attached it limits access to a predefined set of buckets or keys.

Refer to the AWS documentation on Creating a role for web identity or OpenID Connect Federation.

The role that your application assumes must trust the identity provider that is associated with the identity token. In other words, the identity provider must be specified in the role’s trust policy. The call to
AssumeRoleWithWebIdentity
should include the ARN of the role that is specific to the provider through which the user signed in.

Custom Integration

We have made available documentation to write your own connection profile for different combinations of S3/STS and identity provider such as MinIO S3 authenticating with MinIO STS and Keycloak (OIDC).

Documentation

Refer to our S3 documentation.

SMB Protocol Support

SMB (Server Message Block) is used to access Windows File Shares or a Samba Linux Server.

Connecting to SMB

To connect to your SMB (formerly known as CIFS (Common Internet File System) server such as a NAS (Network Attached Storage) using NTLM authentication, select SMB (Server Message Block) in Open Connection or the Bookmark configuration. The default domain name is set to “WORKGROUP” and can be changed to meet the username format requirement depending on the server setup.

SMB Share

You will provided with a list of available shares from the server or alternatively if not supported prompted to input the share name manually. Specify the share name as a Path in the bookmark to avoid connect to a single share.

Up-to-date information about SMB interoperability can be found in out documentation.

Alternative to the official Dropbox client

Dropbox recently adopted the File Provider API available on macOS to be used as the exclusive way to synchronize files with their own app. The most prominent change from a user perspective is the limitation to store all synchronized files in ~/Library/CloudStorage as required by the File Provider API. Many users with large data sets preferred to set a custom location on an external disk previously which is no longer an option.

Use Mountain Duck instead of the official Dropbox client

Mountain Duck is a viable alternative to the official Dropbox client. It allows to connect to and synchronize your files in Dropbox without any additional bloat. In Mountain Duck Preferences, you can change your cache location to a different folder or even to an external drive.

Connecting to Dropbox

Mounting your Dropbox in Finder is straight forward using Mountain Duck:

Select Open Connection within the Mountain Duck dropdown menu

A new bookmark window will pop up

Select Dropbox from the protocol section on the top and choose Connect

Your web browser will open leading you through the authentication and authorization flow

Once successfully connected, your files from Dropbox will open in Finder. To connect to a single folder instead of the root, add a path to your bookmark configuration. Without adding a Path to the bookmark configuration, you will be connected to the root of your Dropbox.

Connect to multiple accounts

Connect to and work with multiple Dropbox accounts simultaneously. Repeat the above steps to connect to an additional Dropbox account you may have access. Open a new bookmark and login to the other Dropbox account in your web browser when authorizing access for Mountain Duck.

Use Cyberduck to retrieve files from Dropbox without syncing

Alternatively, use Cyberduck to browse your Dropbox without syncing the files to your computer.

Boxcryptor Alternative

Boxcryptor has been acquired by Dropbox and will terminate free accounts as of January 31, 2023. Till then, all users have to look for an alternative. It is not clear how customers with existing contracts are served in the future and no new accounts are accepted. So why not use Mountain Duck with support for the Cryptomator vault format independent from a single provider?

Smart Synchronization

Mountain Duck allows you to mount multiple cloud storages and servers as network drives on macOS and Windows using Smart Synchronization for offline access. Use the built-in, fully interoperable support for Cryptomator vaults to encrypt your sensitive data in password-protected vaults with end-to-end and zero-knowledge encryption. You do not need to have the Cryptomator apps installed but can access the same vault using Cryptomator for iOS for example.

Interoperable

Cryptomator is free and open-source software with no security by obscurity, no hidden backdoors from third parties, no need to trust anyone except yourself. No online services, no subscriptions, no accounts.

Migration

Follow these steps to migrate documents currently in Boxcryptor to a Cryptomator vault accessible through Mountain Duck:

Decrypt all existing files in Boxcryptor by following Off-Migration Guide: Decrypt all Boxcryptor encrypted files.

Download and install Mountain Duck for macOS or Windows.

Create a new connection to any service provider supporting one of the many available protocols including S3, Dropbox, OneDrive & Google Drive or any WebDAV and SFTP compatible storage.

Create a new vault in on your preferred storage.

In Smart Synchronization connect mode all files you work with (e.g. open, save, upload or explicitly choose to keep offline) are saved in the local cache to shorten access times and to make them editable when offline. Depending on the size of your files, this might eat up your local disk space. This can be problematic in particular for computers with a small SSD disk. The new cache management feature gives you the ability to define a retention time for files and to limit the size of the cache in general. Both settings can be enabled either separately or in combination.

The first option defines the retention time in days after which a file is purged from the cache when it was not accessed during this period. The size option is a soft limit that does apply on a bookmark basis and excludes files marked to be kept offline by the user. In any case, older files are always purged first.

View and Retrieve Previous File Versions

Cyberduck 8.4 and Mountain Duck 4.12 revamp support to view and retrieve previous versions.

Assigning labels to bookmarks allows grouping bookmarks in folders in the menu further enhancing the unobtrusive user interface.

Features for Teams

Locking files prevents conflicting edits from others while editing a document. Support has been introduced locking files when connecting to a WebDAV server. Additionally, locking for protocols with no native lock support using lock owner files has been implemented to allow alerts for concurrent edits in Microsoft Office.

Also when working with versioned buckets in S3, users can open and revert previous versions of files.

Synchronization Progress

The sync progress area of the file history section shows the files that currently get synchronized and the files that will get synchronized after the current synchronization process. There are different synchronization states that can get displayed within that area: idle, active synchronization process, and prepare for synchronization.

Shown for active synchronization processes are transfer rate, remaining data, and already transferred data. If Mountain Duck synchronizes files in a badge, the file state might differ to the state within the file browser. The sync progress display limit is five entries.

Clicking on a file in the sync progress Mountain Duck reveals it in Finder or File Explorer on Windows.

Recently used Files

The second key section of the file history feature is the Recent Files area in which you can see the last 20 items that Mountain Duck uses for one of the following processes: delete, create, upload, and download. Also, a file may show up with an error state indicating an issue while synchronizing. Further details are available through the Finder or Explorer extension sync options menu item.

Clicking on a file in the Recent Files section Mountain Duck reveals it in Finder or File Explorer on Windows. You can clear out all entries of the list by clicking on the Clear Menu button at the end of the file history menu.

Review Mountain Duck

Take a couple of minutes to write a short review of your experience with Mountain Duck on Capterra, a site used by business software buyersto find suitable solutions. The following describes the connection process to NextCloud with a Mountain Duck Bookmark step-by-step.

Connect to your NextCloud or OwnCloud instance in your web browser and log in.

Click on the option Settings in the lower left of the screen and copy the displayed WebDAV address.

Start Mountain Duck, click on the icon in the tray area or status bar and choose the option New Bookmark.

Paste the previous copied WebDAV address into the server field and press tab. After that, the bookmark should have chosen WebDAV (HTTPS) on its own and should have split the WebDAV address into two parts – the server address and the default path.

Type your Username into the corresponding field and press Connect.

Enter your password in the login prompt displayed and choose Login.

The login and connection process opens automatically a Finder (macOS) or File Explorer (Windows) window with the network drive selected – ready to use.

With Mountain Duck 3 you have the ability to make files and folders accessible for offline usage selectively. This has the advantage that not all data is kept on your local drive for offline usage compared to clients like Dropbox and Google Drive. Additionally, you can apply this principle to all of your bookmarks and not only on the already mentioned cloud storage provider.

Keep files selectively offline

Open Mountain Duck and connect to the desired Bookmark (We’ll use Dropbox in our example).

Navigate to the file or folder that you want to keep on the disk for offline usage.

Right-click on the desired file or folder and choose Sync Options → Keep Offline on Local Disk in the context menu. If you are using macOS you have to activate the Finder Extension in order to reach the described option.

Wait until the file is successfully synchronized. The chosen file or folder should show the following badge icon.

Now you can access the file when you aren’t connected to the Internet. All file changes will be synchronised as soon as connectivity to the remote storage is restored.

Connect to multiple accounts

You can mount multiple accounts at the same time if you have different Dropbox accounts. Create a new bookmark for every account and run through the OAuth flow. Make sure to log out of the Dropbox website prior setting up a new bookmark.

Email is not an option and providers offering a web interface are costly, limit the file size or tend to be unreliable. Cyberduck or Mountain Duck in combination with cloud storage providers allows you to share files without relying on a third-party website.

Auto Expiring Links

With Cyberduck or Mountain Duck and those cloud storage providers, you can share links with third parties that expire after an hour, days or months. Between the protocols, the expiration time of the shared links may vary. Contrary to other solutions there is no restrictions on bandwidth or the number of downloads.

Supported Providers

In the following section, you will find a short guide on how to share large files with Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure, Dropbox or OpenStack Swift cloud storage providers.

Step by Step

Open Cyberduck or Mountain Duck and connect to your Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure, Dropbox or OpenStack Swift bookmark.

Navigate to or upload the file you want to share

Right-click on the file, choose the option Copy URL in the context menu and click on the Pre-Signed URL (within Dropbox it is named Temporary URL) with the wanted expiration time. In Cyberduck the same option is available in Edit → Copy URL→ Signed URL. Share the link with anyone you want to give access to.

There are two services available from Microsoft – OneDrive and SharePoint – which are hidden in a diversity of different packages. SharePoint is a cloud storage service which is only integrated in business packages while OneDrive is existing for personal and business usages. Every person who has a Microsoft Account does have access to the personal version of OneDrive. You can detect if you have a personal or business profile by looking at the email address. If you have a business profile the email address contains onmicrosoft.com.

In the following chart an overview of the most common business profile packages and whether the packages contain OneDrive, SharePoint or both is shown.

[TABLE]

Cyberduck and Mountain Duck support OneDrive in personal and business edition as well as SharePoint through the default bundled connection profiles Microsoft OneDrive and Microsoft SharePoint. It doesn’t make any difference if you are using OneDrive personal or business there is only one profile that works for both. To connect to OneDrive or SharePoint with Cyberduck or Mountain Duck you have to create a corresponding bookmark which will connect to the services via Microsoft Graph.

Connecting to OneDrive Personal and Business

Click on “New Bookmark” if you are using Mountain Duck or on the “+” symbol in the browser window if you are using Cyberduck to create a new bookmark.

Choose the profile Microsoft OneDrive.

Type in the Username field your account email address and connect to the bookmark.

A window appears and prompts for an authentication code. Alongside with the authentication code prompt, a web browser window should open with the login page of Microsoft. Log into your account in the web browser window and copy the afterward appearing authentication code into the field in the authentication prompt window.

If you are using Cyberduck a browser window will appear. If you are using Mountain Duck Windows Explorer or Finder are opened revealing your OneDrive.

Connecting to SharePoint

Click on “New Bookmark” if you using Mountain Duck or on the “+” symbol in the browser window if you using Cyberduck to create a new bookmark.

Choose the previously installed profile Microsoft Sharepoint Document Library or the bundled profile Microsoft SharePoint.

Log in with your *.onmicrosoft.com account to login.microsoftonline.com to connect to your SharePoint document library. If you want to connect to SharePoint online you have to use your OneDrive personal account.

We are thrilled to release a public beta of upcoming Mountain Duck 3. The new version is a major milestone in our development timeline. Bridging the gap between online only access with no use of local disk space in Mountain Duck 2 and the new smart synchronization feature in Mountain Duck 3 with much improved performance accessing files is the main focus.

Think of it like Dropbox for any server and cloud storage but with the option to choose which files and folders are available for offline use while others do not take up disk space on your computer.

Smart Synchronization for Offline Usage

The smart synchronization feature allows to make files available offline. You can also choose to make explicitly all or only selected files and folders available for offline use. Changes to files are saved in a local cache first and uploaded in the background as soon as a connection is available.

Badge icons in the Finder and Windows Explorer indicate the status of files – which indicates if the file is only available when online or is synced to your computer for offline editing. Regardless of the status, you will always see all your files!

Synchronization with the remote storage is paused and resumed automatically depending on your network connection but can also be paused by the user manually. You will see a blinking duck icon in your system tray when a background transfer is currently in progress.

Documentation

Updated documentation for the new smart synchronization feature can be found in our wiki.

Changelog

The full changelog reads

Feature Local cache of remote storage to work with when offline

Feature Explicitly select files or folders to be available offline using context menu

Feature Automatically add files to local cache for offline access when opened

Feature Immediate save of files in local cache with upload to remote storage in background

Feature Badge icons on files and folders with sync status

Feature Pulsating icon in status bar indicates background sync in progress

Feature Menu item to manually pause and resume background sync

Feature Option to enable background indexer to allow browsing folders when offline

Feature Custom disk icons for mounted volumes in Finder (macOS)

Try it today!

We are looking forward to any feedback you may have! Give it a try by choosing Beta in Preferences → Update → Check for Update….

Version 3 will be a paid upgrade to sustain our development efforts. Discounts for existing users between 40% to 100% depending on the date of purchase.

Encrypt your data with Mountain Duck and Cyberduck

Connect to your bookmark and navigate to the location where you want to store your secured data.

Right-click on white space and choose New Encrypted Vault in the context menu.

As described in the appearing window enter a name for your encrypted folder. Afterward, choose a password and confirm it by retyping it in the last field.

Double-click on your newly created Vault and unlock it by typing the password into the corresponding field.

The Vault opens. Now you can create or copy the documents you want to secure into the Vault to encrypt them.

Access your encrypted data with the Cryptomator app on your mobile.

Install the Cryptomator App on your mobile (IOS, Android).

Tab on the plus symbol and choose the option Add existing vault.

To open the previously created Cryptomator Vault choose the cloud service Dropbox, log into your account and navigate to the Vault.

Open the Vault folder and select the masterkey file which is named masterkey.cryptomator. After that, the app should show automatically the landing page of the Cryptomator app with the previously selected Vault pinned.

Tab on the pinned Vault and type the password into the corresponding field. The Vault should open right after you have unlocked it with the password and you have access to your secured data.

This process does not only work with Dropbox but with any other connection supported in Cyberduck and Mountain Duck.
